Community Service
Jo Ann Manes - Community Service Chair Person
Barbara Hargrove & Belinda Potoma
The value of community service projects and especially individual volunteered time cannot be over-stressed. An independent source has informed governmental sources that volunteered service can be valued at more than $21 per hour! This translates into more than a million dollars in Indiana! That's important help for individuals, communities, and our state. Nothing could be more important in these trying times. And our legislators know how valuable our volunteer hours have become. By turning in your volunteer hours forms to LCRTA, you give us positive influence to use when we ask our legislators to approve the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for teachers.
Practically all types of volunteer work count, except for help with immediate family members. Although most would agree that helping family members is worthy and demanding, at this time those hours cannot be counted. But chances are you have volunteered elsewhere. Do you still help out at your school? Your church? Other organizations? Do you run errands for a neighbor? Don't forget to count meeting time as well as travel time as well as time spent on the phone helping others.
Follow this link for the Volunteer Hours Form.

Merrillville, IN 46410

“Legacy Foundation, the community foundation for Lake County, provides scholarships to both high school and current college students from Lake County and the surrounding areas. Each year, we receive approximately 300 to 400 scholarship applications. I’m currently recruiting volunteers to review & score these applications. The review takes place from mid- March through early April this year, although it may vary for each individual scholarship. The application scoring is done completely online. Some of our larger scholarships have an interview component; that one-day interview takes place in late April.”
Legacy Scholarship Reviewer Information
“Each reviewer has approximately 30 applications to review and score. Some people can do this very quickly, other people take longer… that is why I provide the framework of 10 - 20 hours. The scoring timeframe is March 15 April 8, so that we can notify students of their awards according to our timeframe. Since the scoring is online, they can do this any time within the 3 weeks; they are only asked to come to Legacy for a 1 hour training. I am finalizing the dates of that and should have them by the end of the week, but they will be in late February and early March. There will be several dates to choose from so that people can chose one that best meets their needs.”

I am a Hobart High Class of 71 member and a retired Kankakee Valley High School English teacher. I live in Hebron. I am a member of both Jasper and Porter County Retired Teachers Associations. I have recently been contacted to see if I would know of a retired teacher who is licensed to teach 5-8th grade math and science in Lake County Indiana. As an English teacher, I am not qualified, but I was wondering if there was a way to send the word out through network. Upon hearing your reply, I will be able to give you the details about the position. Sincerely,

Legacy Foundation
Jodi Katevia
Legacy Scholarship Administrator
370 E 84th Drive, Suite 100
Merrillville, IN 46410
219.736.1880
